Chiang Mai… What a nice little town!

(Português no fim)
We loved Chiang Mai! How can one not like it? Small, easy to get around, full of charm! We rented a place in Airbnb that was perfect. It was modern so we avoided a lot of bugs (LOL). It was not in the middle of the confusion but not very far, we could walk to old town, but tuk tuks were so cheap that we took one all the time to spare the kids legs, we needed them to walk to the temples and the markets. Chiang Mai was where we spent Christmas and with many stages around the city with Christmas shows, songs and celebrations it made us feel a little like Christmas. On Christmas Eve the kids left some cookies and milk for Santa and went to bed a little worried that Santa didn’t know where they were, since we are always on the move! LOL! We’ve wrapped some small presents for the kids that we bought on the markets a few days before (even the kid’s teddy toys got some presents). We spent Christmas morning at home before going to Chiang Mai’s cathedral for Christmas mass. The amount of people there made us feel ‘less alien’ (because otherwise Christmas day is pretty much business as usual in Thailand). After mass we went out for lunch in front of the river. The rest of the day we spent at home, kids were begging to stay in playing with the new toys.
Chiang Mai is such a nice place, we would go out in the morning and just walk around town until we got tired. After lunch kids usually took a nap and at sunset we would go out again and have dinner at the night markets. Off course we also visited the famous temples…
Chiang Mai is famous for the elephant and tiger attractions. We skipped the tiger thing but couldn’t resist going to an elephant sanctuary where we could feed and go for a shower in the river with the elephants. It was AMAZING! We went in the morning to a small sanctuary, not to the big well known ones. We wanted a smaller place with less people. We did all the feeding part and on the way to the river a pair of elephants started to make out and the people from the village couldn’t stop them, it was hilarious! Kids were a little nervous but that didn’t stop them from interacting with the big creatures, their favourite part was grabbing a brush and wash the elephants… We all had a great morning!
Having grandma with us was also an opportunity for me and Rita to go out by ourselves. It was the 1st time in almost 8 months! Being the romantic couple we are, we went for some quick and cheap thai food and then to watch Muay Thai fights. The ‘stadium’  was not much more than a fighting ring with plastic chairs around, it was nearly full! They served drinks and food, so there was a lively atmosphere. We loved it!
Another good option to those who visit Chiang Mai with kids is the Elephant PooPooPaper Park. They will explain you why elephant’s poo is rich in fibber and will teach/let you make paper from it. Kids favourite! The place itself is very beautiful, with the gardens and the coffee shop, we spend a lot of time there.
We loved Chiang Mai but we were ready for some sun, beach and sea!
*****
