New Zealand #1... Christchurch

November 02, 2016

(Português no fim)
Christchurch was our starting point to explore New Zealand. We landed and went straight home, a nice little house near the center of the city. Well, in theory, after the earthquakes Christchurch’s center is gone, there’s not much left. It’s a strange place, either in ruins or under constructions. We left everything at home and went out for dinner, it was early and the places were pretty empty, until we enter the Mexicanos restaurant. It was so busy that we were very lucky to get a table, all the people arriving after us were sent away. It’s a small, cute and delicious Mexican Restaurant. So here is were everybody is hiding!!! (You don't’ see many people when walking around).
We spent a lot of time at home, doing laundry (after almost a month without washing machine. No we didn't used the clothes dirty, we were in Fiji spending the days in bathing suits). We missed being in a house, with space and comfort just to lay around! When we were not at home we were just walking around…
It was our last day and we didn't want to leave without checking out the Discovery Center, it’s the starting point for all the Antarctic expeditions/research centres (how cool is that?). I’m fascinated by Antartica and the south (and north) pole, it was so nice to see how they live in the south pole and how the bases (New Zealand’s and the neighbour US) “work”.  No way I would be able to survive there, specially in the winter with no sunlight and beyond bearable temperatures, brave and crazy people! I’ve sat for 45 minutes watching a documentary…
There’s a lot of entertainment in Discovery Center. You can ride a Hagglund, the special cars used to “drive” on Antartica, it goes through wood, water, rocks and “mountains”, It’s a very bumpy journey. It has a theatre showing two 4D movies. We watched both, the chairs move and there’s splashes of water, snow and bubbles. One is a short version of happy feet and the other is a trip to Antartica. There’s a room with the four seasons of Antartica, copying a base, it even snows. The favourite of all the things was the snow storm room! After putting on a warm coat and shoes you enter a -8 degrees room full of snow, then the wind starts to blow and a storm happens, it goes down to -17 degrees, it’s freezing cold, kids and I were so cold that we decided to seek for shelter in an igloo. It’s a fun experience! The kids loved it so much that they spent the entire time there while I watched the documentary in other room. When I went to get them they were so cold, red and with happy faces.
We went home to pack, eat something and sleep… But there was no electricity, so we decided to go again to the Mexicano Restaurant hoping for the light too be back in the meantime.
