New Zealand #4... A cruise in Fiordland!

This country never stops to amaze us! Have you ever heard about Milford Sound? We never did until we started planning this trip. It’s in the bottom of the world (southwest of the south Island) in the Fiordland National Park. I was never a ‘close to the Nature’ person, but since I’ve arrived in New Zealand I guess I will be spending all the weekends trekking once I’m back LOL!
We were supposed to stop in Te Anau first, but we wanted to do a cruise in Milford Sound and apparently its better to go in the morning, less people (before all the tour buses from Te Anau and Queenstown show up) and the light is beautiful. To go in the morning you need to sleep there. So we drove all the way up (and down), the road is beautiful but scary, and slept in the only lodge/caravan park in Milford Sound (sand fly paradise, uff, there’s millions of it). After a bit more than 1 hour driving from Te Anau, we approached Milford Sound in epic conditions: the rain had just stopped and the sun was out. Rain in the fiords causes hundreds (literally) of water falls, most of them coming down the rocks all the way from the top, and lots of rainbows. With almost no more cars on the road, we drove the last few kilometres quite slowly before arriving to our overnight spot (the lack of decent photos is because Pedro was driving and I was too scared of the road to do anything).
If you want to go on a cruise in Milford Sound there are so many boats to choose from that it becomes a bit overwhelming, too many options in such a small place. One thing we were sure, we wanted to avoid a boat with thousands of people armed with selfie sticks, so we were looking for something smaller. Also, we didn't want one that took hours, the place is amazing but around 2 hours is more than enough. That narrowed our options to just a few and we went with the one with the nicest people and best reviews!
We started our boat cruise around 10am and were lucky enough to have a slightly sunny day. In Milford Sound you feel incredibly small, even the planes look like small flies against the backdrop of the fiords, the scale and magnitude of the mountains, the waterfalls and all the surroundings are incredible!
From start we felt very welcomed because the captain allowed the kids to get some chocolate cookies and go on the wheel house with him for most of the cruise. That was some serious multitasking from the captain who took care of the boat, kept everyone informed of what we were seeing and played babysitter. No need to say how much they enjoyed it!
The cruise itself was something out of this world. We had never been in a scenery quite like this and loved every moment of it. Vertical rock walls more than 1000 meters high, seals, waterfalls, snow…you name it.
It really is difficult to have an idea of how big things are here. From the distance, some waterfalls look like they’re not much bigger than a regular shower, but once you get close to it, or under it as the captain did on 2 occasions, you realize just how big they are (and how cold glaciar water is).
Back on land, what were empty docks earlier were now a caos of people small planes and buses arriving from everywhere. We felt we had hit the jackpot this time. Thank you very much to everyone in Cruise Milford NZ.
About were we stayed: Milford Sound Lodge is the only option if you want to stay here. From a few rooms overlooking the river and fiords to campervan and tent sites, they have it all. It felt good to have a decent shower after a few days free camping with no WC. Special thanks to all the staff. Very friendly and helped us a lot to get some laundry done

Este país não para de nos surpreender! Já ouviram falar de Milford Sound? Nós nunca tínhamos ouvido falar até começarmos a planear esta viagem. Está no fundo do mundo (sudoeste da ilha sul) no Fiordland National Park. Eu nunca fui muito de natureza e ar livre, mas desde que cheguei à Nova Zelândia acho que quando voltar a casa vou passar todos os fins de semana no trekking LOL
Tínhamos pensado parar antes em Te Anau (a cerca de 2 horas de Milford Sound) mas queríamos fazer um passeio de barco aqui e aparentemente a manhã é o melhor momento para o fazer, com menos gente (antes de chegarem todos os grupos de Te Anau e Queenstown) e luz mais bonita. Para poder fazer o passeio de manha tínhamos que dormir no único parque de Milford Sound (capital mundial das sand flies) por isso viemos directamente por uma estrada linda mas que por vezes mete medo. A nossa chegada foi em condições épicas: tinha acabado de chover e estava sol. Sempre que chove por aqui aparecem centenas (literalmente) de cascatas, muitas delas a começar no topo das rochas, e muitos arco-íris. Quase sem carros na estrada, os últimos quilómetros antes de chegar foram feitos muito devagar (não temos fotografias especialmente boas porque o Pedro estava a guiar eu eu estava com demasiado medo da estrada para fazer o que fosse).
Para escolher um barco para passear em Milford Sound há tantas opções que se torna difícil. Tantos barcos num sítio tao pequeno chega a ser confuso. De uma coisa tínhamos a certeza, queríamos evitar um barco com milhares de pessoas munidas de selfie sticks por isso procuramos um barco mais pequeno. Também não queríamos um cruzeiro demasiado longo porque o sítio é lindo mas 2 horas são mais que suficientes.
Isto reduziu o numero de opções e escolhemos o que tinha as pessoas mais simpáticas e as melhores opiniões online!
Começamos pelas 10 da manha e tivemos sorte porque havia algum sol. Em Milford Sound sentimo-nos pequenos, até os aviões parecem moscas comparados com os fiordes, as cascatas e todo o cenário.
Desde o princípio que nos sentimos muito bem vindos porque o capitão deixou os miúdos agarrarem numas bolachas de chocolate e irem com ele na cabine o tempo quase todo. Um exemplo serio de multitasking do capitão que tomou conta do barco, deu informações sobre o que estávamos a ver e ainda serviu de babysitter. Nem é preciso contar o que eles se divertiram!
O passeio em si foi uma coisa de outro mundo. Nunca tínhamos estado em fiordes e adoramos do principio ao fim. Paredes rochosas com mais de 1000 metros, focas, cascatas,.. tudo!
Não é fácil ter uma ideia do grande que são as coisas aqui. À distancia, algumas cascatas parecem pouco mais do que um chuveiro mas quando estamos mais perto, ou debaixo delas como aconteceu duas vezes, percebemos o enorme que são (e o gelada que é a água que vem dos glaciares).
De volta a terra, onde antes estavam umas docas vazias estava agora um caos de pessoas, autocarros e aviões a chegar de todos os sítios. Desta vez sentimos que nos tinha saído o jackpot. Muito obrigado a todas as pessoas do Cruise Milford NZ!
Sobre o sítio onde ficamos: o Milford Sound Lodge é a única opção para quem quer ficar aqui. Desde quartos com vista para o rio e fiordes a sítios para caravanas e tendas, têm tudo. Soube muito bem ter bons duches depois de alguns dias a acampar livremente sem WCs. Um obrigado especial a todo o staff: muito simpáticos e uma ajuda grande para conseguirmos lavar alguma roupa.
