Enjoying Vanuatu...

(Português no fim)
This country is getting better and better! We moved from Port Vila to Espiritu Santo, what a great place! We booked the 2 first nights just to have a feel for the place and decide where to stay for longer. We stayed in Village du Santo, it was perfect for 2 nights but not good for more, in our case, since we were not planing to do any tours at the beginning and to spend the entire time there was a little “small” for the kids. There was not enough space to run around. It had a small pool but not a nice area to seat and just relax. It was not in the center but just a short, and very cheap, taxi ride. It had no access to the beach. People were very nice and they were great with the kids. On the first day we went to the beach in front of the resort next door and we automatically knew we wanted to move there. Beachfront resort has a beautiful black sandy beach with paddle boards and kayaks, we like that! There’s a big pool and huge grass in front for kids to use all their energy. The people are, once again, incredibly nice. The days around here are spent between the pool and the beach, not doing much. We are doing a little of “studying” everyday with Francisco and trying to make Teresinha paint inside the lines. We headed a couple of times to the market to eat on the food boots. Nice food for a ridiculous price, each portion, cooked in front of us, cost around 2,5 Euros! One  morning Pedro left early to dive and we met him at Million Dollar Point, in between dives. We headed back home on the back of a pick up, it was an excitement for the kids!
About diving...
Diving has it's risks but the danger on these dives was of a different kind. A few minutes after Portugal won the football Eurocup, in Paris against France, I was about to jump into the water with Santo Island Diving being the only non french of the group :-) The usual small talk before the dive was:
 - ...and where are you from?
 - If you really must know, I'm from Portugal
 - MERDE....
Diving in Vanuatu is mainly about World War II wrecks. The first dive was on Million Dollar Point where tons of american military material was dumped after the war. Before the US troops left Luganville, lots of bulldozers, cars and boats were sunk very near the beach were you start your dive. It's a mega scrap yard well worth a dive. The other dive was Vanuatu's most famous, the SS President Coolidge. A luxury boat turned into a war ship for the War that sunk in Espiritu Santo after hitting a mine. It's amazing how intact it is after all these years and you can still see ammunition, cars, plates, boots and lots of paraphernalia. It was a short 50 minute dive on a wreck that needs probably 20 dives to get to know. Good visibility, warm water and we were the only divers on both dives...perfect.

Kids are very calm and happy, I think they, like us, are finding Vanuatu a great spot!
