We had planned to go to Kaikora, but we had seen dolphins, seals and all kind of sea life already and it was a 3 hour drive there and another 3 hours to return. We were very close to Picton (where de boat to the north island leaves from) so we decided to go directly to Wellington (plus we needed our take care of visas for the next country) and skip Kaikora! It was destiny…
We had a very bumpy ride on the ferry, strong winds, rain and big waves! Everyone says the journey is beautiful but not on our case. There was a lot of people seasick on the boat and we were all stuck inside because of the storm outside. After a few hours we arrived safe and sound to Wellington. The welcome couldn't have been more perfect, we parked the campervan on the drive way and got our stuff ready to spend a few days with the Wilkinsons who had invited us to their house (THANK YOU!). We spent the day with our friends, kindergarten fair and lunch by the sea with a pleasant evening at home. In the middle of the night everything started shaking, I waited and it kept shaking so I woke up Pedro. We thought that it was normal but then we heard Rob shouting for us to get out of bed and get to the house main door (Teresa though it was day already and started asking for breakfast LOL). After a while, at the entrance, everyone went back to sleep, well to bed, because we were all too scared to go back to sleep and the feeling that everything was shaking was constant. I’m glad we were not alone in the motorhome, we wouldn't know what to do. Only the next morning we realised, and remembered, we were supposed to be in Kaikora, the epicentre of the earthquake! Roads and train tracks were broken and people were stuck there. But the worst was the constant shaking from after shocks and the possible replicas. I guess we have someone out there taking very good care of us…
The next day, Monday, everyone stayed home, schools and companies were closed. We called the embassy and they were open, so we drove on empty streets to get our visas. It was very strange to be in a city complete empty and all closed, like a ghost city. We got all the paperwork done and went back home. At lunch time a big replica, the house shakes again… I have to admit that I was getting really scared! The news were on and we start listening that they were closing some buildings in Wellington, the embassy that had our passports was one of the non allowed areas! Now what? It will take ages before they reopen. We can’t stay here forever waiting, what are we going to do? Once again, that little star looking over our family did her magic. They had our passports with them and we were the very few getting out visas on it. Pedro went to a coffee shop to get them a few days later.
A part from all that, and the constant shaking, we had the most wonderful time in Wellington, we spend a lot of time at home relaxing (we missed being in a house), we visited Garage Project (the best and craziest beers in the world), we went to walk around the city and we visited the great Te Papa Museum (Gallipoli - The scale of our war is a free exhibition from Peter Jackson that we loved). I even cut my hair! It was horrible and I was so desperate for a cut that I considered Pedro giving me one… LOL.
We had a birthday party and got to meet the nice family of our friends, I was in charge of the cake, It was a big thing, I spent the morning stressed baking it! Thank God everyone loved it! The grandparents were the best, we would have liked to spend more time with them!
In the middle of the week we spent there, we went for dinner with the nicest Portuguese family, they invited us for dinner a long time ago when they fond about us on the blog so it was nice to have a Portuguese meeting in Wellington. How cool is that? Kids loved their son and they spent hours playing, until today Francisco and Teresa talk about Afonso and ask to go play with him again. The kids tried for the first time “tremoços”, we needed to come all the way to New Zealand for them to try this typical Portuguese “delicacy” LOL.
Wellington will always have a special place in our hearts! We already miss our Kiwi family like crazy… They were the best hosts ever and thinking that we had just met for 10 days in Fiji (and more than a month earlier)! It feels we have always been best friends! We had the most wonderful time with you guys… We just wish we lived closer!

Tínhamos planeado ir para Kaikora, mas já tínhamos visto golfinhos, focas e muita variedade de animais marinhos e implicava guiar 3 horas para ir e outras tantas para voltar. Estávamos muito perto de Picton (onde se apanha o ferry para a ilha norte) por isso decidimos ir directamente para Wellington e saltar Kaikora (ainda por cima tínhamos que tratar de vistos em Wellington). Foi o destino…
A viagem de ferry foi com ondas grandes, vento e chuva! Toda a gente diz que a viagem no Interislander é muito bonita mas não no nosso caso…não se conseguia ver nada. Muita gente enjoada e fechada dentro do barco porque a tempestade não deixava ir apanhar ar :-). Depois de algumas horas chegamos sãos e salvos ao nosso destino. A nossa chegada não podia ter sido melhor porque foi só estacionar, pegar nas nossas coisas e passar alguns dias em casa dos Wilkinsons que nos tinham convidado para casa deles. Passamos o dia com eles, fomos a uma festa do infantário de um dos filhos e almoçamos juntos e passamos a tarde calmamente em casa.
A meio da noite tudo começou a tremer. Eu esperei um bocado e continuava por isso acordei o Pedro. Pensamos que era normal mas depois começamos a ouvir o Rob a gritar e mandar todos para a entrada da casa (a Teresinha achou que já era de manhã e apenas perguntava o que era o pequeno almoço). Depois de um bocado todos juntos na entrada da casa (para sair rapidamente se fosse preciso) voltamos para a cama sem conseguir dormir, com tremores constantes e nós todos um bocado acelerados e alerta.
Foi uma sorte não estarmos por nossa conta na caravana porque não saberíamos o que fazer. Apenas na manhã seguinte realizamos que tínhamos nos planos ter ido para Kaikora , o epicentro do terramoto! Estradas cortadas, carris de comboio desfeitos e muita gente lá pressa. Mas o pior eram os constantes ‘aftershocks’ e a expectativa de réplicas. Tivemos uma boa estrelinha, se não ha coincidências sentimo-nos muito protegidos :-)
No dia seguinte, segunda, toda a gente ficou em casa, escolas e empresas fechadas. Mesmo assim ligamos para a embaixada e como estavam abertos lá fomos, por ruas desertas tratar dos nossos vistos. Foi estranho estar numa cidade basicamente fechada que mais parecia uma cidade fantasma.
Tratamos da papelada e voltamos para casa. À hora do almoço toda a casa voltou a tremer bastante…aqui foi quando me comecei a sentir assustada. Estávamos com as notícias na televisão quando disseram que por segurança tinham fechado alguns edifícios no centro de Wellington e a embaixada onde tínhamos deixado os passaportes estava dentro de uma area agora proibida. E agora? Ia demorar muito antes de voltarem a abrir e para nós ia desorganizar tudo ficar indefinidamente à espera. Mais uma vez a nossa estrelinha protectora trabalhou e conseguimos falar com uma pessoa da embaixada que nos disse que com muita sorte os nossos passaportes tinham sido dos poucos a ser processados e que esta pessoa os tinha com ela. Combinamos encontrarmos num café perto da embaixada para os ir buscar: óptimo serviço!
Confusão com vistos e tremores constantes à parte, a nossa estadia em Wellington foi óptima. Passamos bastante tempo em casa (sabe bem depois de 1 mês de caravana), visitamos o Garage Project (as melhores e mais loucas cervejas do mundo), andamos pela cidade e visitamos o museu Te Papa (o principal museu da NZ) para ver a exibição do Peter Jackson chamada Gallipoli - The Scale of Our War. É gratis, temporária e a não perder para quem estiver por Wellington. A nossa estadia foi tao boa que até fui cortar o meu cabelo. Estava tao feio e eu tao desesperada por um corte que cheguei a pôr a hipótese do Pedro me cortar o cabelo… LOL.
Tivemos também a festa de anos de um dos miúdos Wilkinson e ficamos a conhecer a familia toda deles. Gostamos muito de toda a gente, especialmente dos avós. Pena não passar mais tempo com eles.
Eu fiquei encarregue de fazer o bolo, o que é importante, e passei toda a manhã a estressar enquanto o fazia. Felizmente toda a gente gostou e apesar de ser muito grande quase não sobrou.
A meio da semana também fomos jantar a casa de uma família portuguesa que vive em Wellington, que nos convidou para jantar há já muito tempo quando nos descobriu através do blog. Adoramos a ‘reunião de portugueses’ em Wellington e o jantar estava óptimo. O Francisco e a Teresinha adoraram o filho deles e até hoje falam do Afonso. Foi também neste jantar que eles experimentaram pela primeira vez tremoços (foi preciso vir até à NZ!!)
Wellington vai sempre ficar na nossa memória e já estamos com saudades na nossa família kiwi. Foram os melhores anfitriões, numa casa linda e pensar que apenas os conhecíamos de alguns dias em Fiji há 1 mês atrás. Parece que sempre fomos amigos!
