Before we continue our story in New Zealand we need to tell you about Fiji…
We loved Australia, but we really missed the sun and the beach! We are so much more happy here! Fiji is exactly like we would have expected… clear water, sandy beach and perfect temperature!
We so needed some rest after Australia! (It’s not a joke, it’s serious… we never stopped from one place to another, and we walked and walked. Never stayed still either with the campervan or later in Sydney and Melbourne.
We wanted to stay all the time in the Yasawa Islands but we could not find a place to sleep on the first few nights because of Australia/New Zealand spring break (we just don't learn and we keep forgetting to book in advance on those situations).
We spent the first few days in Denarau and I seriously don't get why people come to Fiji and stay there. The hotel was great and all but it has no beach and you are just stuck at one of the resort’s many pools. You don't get to know the people and see the amazing Fiji.
But as I said we were tired and I must admit that a few days of buffet breakfast and hotel felt really good. Kid’s (Pedro included) really enjoy themselves on a big pool! It was also an easy place to set up a small party for Teresinha’s birthday.
After 3 days we were ready to get in the Yasawa Flyer (the big taxi boat that goes around all the Yasawa islands) and go to our paradise island. It took us about 4 hours to get to ‘our’ island, the weather was good and the surroundings are out of this world.
There’s not much to say about the island itself. Picture perfect beach, a small but very good Kid’s Club and the weather was good except for two stormy days. Pedro went for 2 dives one morning and one of them was a really good one (you can see the movie here).
But what really made us enjoy Fiji was meeting a very special family, the Wilkinson family. Like us they have 2 kids, and we met them on the beach the first day and since then we were always together. We had every meal and the entire day at the beach together making it hard to believe we weren’t long time friends.
As you know by now the beach is were we feel most at home and the time we spent in Fiji went by faster then we would’ve liked. Teresa and Francisco spent the entire time in the water, they both can swim without floaters by now, they are 2 little fishes. There was a slide with a sliding mat and a high pyramid, from where they jumped into the water screaming cannonball!
We never thought hiring a nanny, but we did almost everyday there! Kids would all have dinner very early and then off to bed, the nanny would watch them while the grownups had dinner and some beers… It felt so good!
We were really sad to leave Fiji, and our Friends!

Antes de continuarmos com a nossa historia na NZ, voltamos atrás para o post que estava pendente, Fiji.
Adoramos a Australia, mas já estávamos com saudades do sol e da praia! É onde somos mais felizes, claramente! Fiji é exactamente aquilo que se espera: água quente e transparente, óptima areia e temperatura perfeita.
Estávamos a precisar de um descanso depois da Australia (não, não estamos a gozar, na Australia foram 2 meses onde não parámos de um lado para o outro, andamos muito e nunca estivemos quietos, nem na caravana nem depois em Sydney e Melbourne).
O nosso objectivo nas Fiji era ter ficado o tempo todo nas ilhas Yasawa, mas não conseguimos encontrar sítio para ficar nas primeiras noites por ser férias escolares em Sydney/NZ (continuamos a não aprender e a não marcar as coisas com mais antecedência nestas situações).
Passamos os primeiros dias em Denarau e, francamente, não percebemos a quantidade de gente que vem para as Fiji e fica aqui. O hotel era óptimo mas não tem praia e as pessoas ficam ‘presas' nas piscinas. Não se conhece quase ninguém e não se vê Fiji.
Mas, como disse, estávamos cansados e tenho que admitir que uns dias de pequeno almoço bufet e hotel souberam muito bem. Os miúdos (Pedro incluído) divertem-se nas piscinas (ou em qualquer bocado de água). Foi também um sítio bom para organizar uma pequena festa de anos para a Teresinha.
Ao fim de 3 dias estávamos já a entrar no Yasawa Flyer (um ferry grande que distribui toda a gente pelas ilhas) de caminho para a nossa ilha paradisíaca. O caminho até à nossa ilha demorou 4 horas, com bom tempo e uma paisagem do outro mundo.
Não há muito a dizer sobre a ilha em si. Praia perfeita, um pequeno e bom clube de crianças e o tempo esteve bom excepto 2 dias de tempestade. O Pedro fez 2 mergulhos e um deles muito bom (com direito a filme e tudo)
Mas o que realmente fez de Fiji uma paragem especial foi conhecer uma família muito especial, os Wilkinson.
Tal como nós eles têm 2 filhos e conhecemo-nos na praia no primeiro dia e depois disso estivemos sempre juntos, às refeições, na praia e nas cervejas, parecendo que já éramos amigos de longa data.
Como já estão fartos de saber a praia é onde mais gostamos de estar e o tempo em Fiji passou muito mais depressa do que nos apetecia. Os espanhóis (putos) passaram o tempo inteiro na água, já nadam sem boias, estão 2 peixes. Havia um escorrega, um tapete deslizante e uma pirâmide insuflavel de onde saltavam a gritar ‘cannonball’!
Nunca pensamos arranjar babysitter mas aqui foi quase todos os dias. Crianças jantavam cedo e iam dormir enquanto a babysitter ficava ‘de guarda’. Isto permitia aos adultos ir jantar mais tarde e ficar à conversa com umas cervejas. Soube BEM!
Tivemos muita pena de deixar Fiji e os nossos Amigos.
