Brisbane: 17.432Km from home

If only it was closer to Portugal/Family&Friends, we could so live in Brisbane! Great city, it has everything needed, relaxed atmosphere and winters with 25 degrees?!?! We stayed in a house that we could live in easily, big, modern and prepared to live not only for short stays. Even better, at check in the owner asked us if we liked beer and gave us a box os Brisbane beer :) everyone was very nice Quattro on Astor. For the first time since we started our journey we had decent supermarkets, like in Spain, with food that we are used to and at decent prices. After almost 2 months being back own the city was a welcomed change. We cooked at home lunch and dinner everyday except for a much missed McDonalds and the day we went out for lunch with the lovely couple we had as neighbours in Turtle Beach House in Vanuatu. They took us to a delicious greek restaurant in South Bank.

The first thing we did once in Australia was hold a Koala and feed the cangurus, we have never seen these animals in real life before so it was good fun! We went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where we spent the entire day. Curiosity: the best part of the day was the dog and sheep show where the shepherd sheared the sheep. It was a fun for all the family! Our days in Brisbane were very calm and we stayed at home a lot, it’s not everyday that we have a decent home to just lay around. We walked several times to the south bank area, to the playgrounds and the beach. It’s not a real one, they have built a beach with sand and several pools in front of the river. It was winter so it was not crowded at all (I don’t even want to imagine how it must be like in the summer). We went to the Science Center, the perfect “museum” for kids (more like a science playground), we spent there the entire day, we left around lunch time to eat some pizzas we had brought from home in the gardens and went back in again until it closed. Kids enjoyed it a lot. There were some curious facts there, like a table with some very big table and chairs so we (the adults) can experience what they feel like when seated at a normal table. (I will never get mad with them again to sit straight and eat without dropping food, its really hard LOL)..

We met the nicest Portuguese family in Vanuatu (the men) and they invited us for lunch at their house in Brisbane. Carlos came and picked us up, when we got there the barbecue was all set and the beers cold! Thank you very much Carlos anda Carmo. Later his son Ricardo showed up with his wife and 3 kids. It was so much fun. What a nice day! Kids had other kids and toys to play. We had grown ups to talk too… And the best of all is that they were Portuguese, we felt like at home! We are starting to miss home a lot!

We had to experience everything so we even went to a hospital! Francisco fell of the sofa and bumped his head on the table, there was blood coming out like crazy. We ran with him to the closest clinic, apparently in Australia the doctors can mend heads and you don't need to go to the hospital. Francisco’s wound was too big and they suggested we go to a hospital instead so they could give him some anaesthesia. Off we went again with his head still bleeding, it was on the other side of the river, a little far from where we were. At the hospital they were very nice and gave us the second lowest fee, 500 dollars?!?!? What?!?!? Just to put some liquid and glue?!?! If you are reading this, dear insurance, pls reimburse us quickly LOL! He was fine all the time… Jumping and laughing! He once touched the cut and said “The brain is disgusting” His head is ok now, just one more scar

We were supposed to be in Brisbane in a month time, but with the mess with Virgin we lost our flight and campervan reservation to go straight to Cairns and drive from north to south. It was cheaper to start from Brisbane so we changed our plans and started on Brisbane. We stayed much longer in Brisbane than we had planned but there weren’t any motorhomes available so we had to wait until we could get one…

Se fosse mais perto de Portugal/família e amigos, viver em Brisbane seria uma séria opção. Uma optima cidade com tudo o que é preciso, ambiente muito relaxado e invernos com 25 graus! Ficamos numa casa onde facilmente podíamos viver, bom espaço, moderna e equipada para viver (não apenas para estadias curtas). Melhor ainda, no check in o dono perguntou-nos se gostávamos de cerveja e deu-nos uma caixa de cerveja de Brisbane :-) todos foram muito simpáticos nestes apartamentos (Quattro on Astor). Pela primeira vez nesta viagem tínhamos supermercado bons, como em Espanha, e comida mais familiar a preços decentes. Depois de quase 2 meses estar de volta à cidade soube bem. Jantamos e almoçamos em casa todos os dias com a exceção de um McDonalds (sentimos a falta) e de um dia que fomos almoçar, com o casal vizinho que tivemos em Turtle Bay em Vanuatu, a um óptimo restaurante grego em South Bank.

A primeira coisa que fizemos quando chegamos a Australia foi abraçar um Koala e dar de comer aos cangurus, nunca tínhamos visto tais animais ao vivo, foi bastante divertido! Fomos ao Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, passámos lá um dia inteiro. Curiosidade: a melhor parte do dia foi o show de cães e ovelhas e o pastor a tosquiar a ovelha. Foi um dia divertido para a familia inteira! Os nossos dias em Brisbane foram muito calmos e ficamos por casa várias vezes aproveitando ter uma casa boa para se estar. Como sempre andamos muito a pé, especialmente para a zona de South Bank com parques infantis, museus e até ’praia’. Não era uma praia à séria mas uma praia artificial com areia tropical e água transparente com algumas piscinas para crianças ao lado, tudo construído na margem do rio. Sendo Inverno e não estando muito calor não estava muita gente mas nem quero imaginar como será no Verão.

Fomos ao Science Center, o museu perfeito para crianças (parece um parque infantil das ciências), onde passamos o dia quase todo apenas saindo para os jardins à volta para almoçar pizza que trouxemos de casa. A Teresa e o Francisco adoraram.

Para além de muitas experiências com vento, água, magnetismo e electricidade havia outras coisas curiosas como um conjunto de mesa e cadeiras enormes para os adultos poderem experimentar como são as cadeiras e mesas normais para uma criança de 3 anos (não volto a reclamar com eles por não se sentarem direitos e pela comida que cai para o chão…não é fácil).

Em Vanuatu tínhamos conhecido uma família de portugueses (os homens apenas) que viviam aqui em Brisbane e que nos convidaram para almoçar em casa deles. O Carlos veio buscar-nos a casa e quando chegamos a casa dele já tudo estava preparado para um grande churrasco incluindo cerveja gelada. Muito obrigado Carlos e Carmo! Um pouco mais tarde chegou o filho deles o Ricardo (que também conhecemos em Vanuatu) com a mulher e 3 filhos. Um dia perfeito em que a Teresa e o Francisco tinham outros miúdos e brinquedos e nós tínhamos adultos para conversar e, melhor ainda, em português. Sentimo-nos em casa desde o principio.

Para conhecer Brisbane a fundo ainda fomos a um hospital! O Francisco andava a saltar no sofa e bateu com a cabeça numa mesa fazendo um bom corte que sangrou bastante. Fomos a correr para uma clínica perto de casa onde nos disseram que poderiam tratar dele sem ir ao hospital mas quando lá chegamos o médico acho que seria melhor dar anestesia por isso aconselhou-nos a ir ao hospital. Lá fomos outra vez, com a cabeça ainda a sangrar, para o hospital no outro lado do rio e um bocado longe de casa. Já no hospital foram muito simpáticos e cobraram nos o segundo preço maios barato da tabela de urgências: 500 dólares!!!! au!!! O desinfectante e cola mais caros da história. Queridos amigos do seguro, se estão a ler isto, por favor estamos à espera do reembolso com alguma urgência :-) Durante todo este tempo o Francisco esteve calmo e bem disposto. Uma vez que pôs o dedo no corte, disse “o cérebro é nojento”. A cabeça dele esta bem, apenas mais uma cicatriz para a coleção.

No nosso plano só estaríamos em Brisbane daqui a 1 mês mas com o caos da Virgin Australia perdemos o nosso voo para Cairns onde íamos começar a nossa viagem de caravana, de norte para sul. Como nos ficava mais barato, mudamos os planos e alugamos a caravana desde Brisbane e faremos a viagem de sul para norte.

Acabamos por ficar mais tempo do que previsto em Brisbane porque não havia caravanas disponíveis e tivemos que esperar uns dias.

I don’t even know where to start…

We were flying out of Vanuatu on Monday (1/08). After all the wait for check in and just about to board, they start telling us that the plain was delayed due to bad weather. We were all in the departing lounge and the plane was not there way past departure time. Flight was cancelled and no specific reason was given. Off we went, pass the emigration again and off to check in counter. At this point kids have been alternating between crying, complaining and running around. Since we had 2 small kids we had priority and were one of the first people to arrive to Holiday Inn, where they sent part of the passengers of the plane. Still no updates and we had no idea why the flight had been cancelled. The day after we woke up with a text message saying that the Port Vila airport runaway was not safe and that Virgin Australia was conducting the necessary studies and we would have to wait for the report. One more day and night waiting… At the end of the day people started to receive e-mails with the dates they were allocated to flight back (the day after 3/08, Saturday 6/08 and Monday 8/08) we had nothing. When we woke up we still had nothing and we were delivered a letter saying that we were not in that day flight and they had no idea when we were going to flight back. Also, Virgin was not going to pay anymore for hotel expenses! What? Basically, they just leave you on Vanuatu on your own (and it’s not cheap) with no place to stay. They offered to refund the tickets for you to buy other ticket with other airline, but we are 4 and the price was much higher. Even with no flight we went to the airport anyway, we were one of the first to arrive (it was not even noon) we complained, we “cried”, we did everything we could… It’s incredible how can they just leave people there with no support at all. Plus, they had the “balls” to tell us that they were already too nice because they paid the last 2 nights and meals when it wasn’t their fault! Seriously?!? The seats were allocated by class and by frequent flyer points and all that crap, all people that were not Australian were left behind (off course, we live too far to use Virgin Australia again so they just didn't care) …even us, the only ones with 2 little kids! We were about to camp in Dorotee's (the person in charge) office… We waited from 11 to 2h30, with the kids, in the airport with no lunch or any food until they told us they were able to put us on the flight due to a few ‘no shows’. We were the last ones to enter the departing lounge… every one cheered and clapped when they saw us as no one believed we had a chance of getting on the plane!

I’ve never seen this in my life, bullshit after bullshit, lies and more lies! First the bad weather then the state of the runway (while other companies kept flying). People were allocated to flights that were cancelled… The option was the refund and get other company ticket, at a much higher price. They were trying to convince everyone to do that (the cheaper and easier option for them). We were told that they were trying to fly people out through Fiji… bla, bla, bla! But what shocks me the most is that they were not paying more accommodation neither food. Ok, they don't need to pay at Holliday Inn, an excellent but expensive resort, they can pay for mid range accommodation, but leaving people on the street?! And if people can not afford it? What will they do? Sleep on the street!!? Dear Virgin, that’s outrageous and shows that you have absolute no respect for people! You didn't even sent a representative from Virgin to the hotel (Dorotee), you just sent out some letters and the poor hotel manager spent the entire morning attending everyone regarding the flights. I would not say never, but if I can I will avoid everything related to Virgin…

Now, picture all the above with 2 toddlers!!! It was just too bad to be true!

Tks a lot for everything and for being so nice and treating us so well. The hotel is top! If it wasn’t the uncertainty of the flights we were more than happy to have stayed a few more days…

Nem sei por onde começar…

Tínhamos o voo de saída de Vanuatu na segunda-feira 1 de Agosto. Depois de uma espera interminável para fazer o check in e a poucos minutos de embarcar, começamos a ouvir avisos de que o avião estava atrasado devido a mau tempo. Continuamos nas partidas do aeroporto e o avião continuava sem dar sinal de vida já bem depois da suposta hora de partida. No aviso seguinte informam-nos de que o voo tinha sido cancelado, sem mais pormenores. Lá fomos todos em ‘sentido contrario’ pelo balcão de emigração para os balcões de check in. Até aqui os miúdos tinham estado irrequietos entre queixas e choraminguices. Como tínhamos 2 crianças tivemos prioridade (aeroportos e aviões com crianças tem as suas vantagens) fomos dos primeiros a chegar ao Holiday Inn Vanuatu, um dos hotéis para onde os passageiros foram enviados. Até aqui continuamos sem qualquer update e sem saber porque se tinha cancelado o voo. No dia seguintes acordamos com com uma mensagem que dizia que a pista do aeroporto de Port Vila não era segura e que a Virgin Australia estava a estudar o assunto e que teríamos que esperar pelos resultados desse estudo. Esperamos o dia inteiro e ficamos mais uma noite no hotel. Durante essa noite várias pessoas começaram a receber emails com as novas datas dos voos de regresso (o dia seguinte 2/08, sábado 6/08 e segunda 8/08) e nós não recebemos nada. Quando acordamos no dia seguinte ainda não tínhamos nenhuma informação e recebemos uma carta a dizer que não estávamos no voo desse dia nem em nenhum dos outros. Não estava na carta mas dizia quem sabia que a Virgin também não pagaria mais custos de estadia. OQUÊ? Basicamente deixaram as pessoas em Port Vila, entregues a si próprias e sem sítio onde ficar (e Port Vila não é barato). Deram a opção de devolver o bilhete para comprar bilhete com outras companhias (que sim estavam a voar) mas os preços eram proibitivos.

Apesar de não termos voo nesse dia decidimos ir para o aeroporto com as pessoas que tinham voo :-) e fomos dos primeiros a chegar ao aeroporto. Reclamações, lágrimas, berros, algum teatro e mais tudo o que pudemos para ver se conseguíamos ir no voo desse dia. É inacreditável como simplesmente deixam os clientes sem qualquer tipo de responsabilidade. Ainda tiveram os tomates de nos dizer que já tinham ido para além das obrigações ao pôr as pessoas em hotéis durante 2 dias…

O critério de atribuição dos lugares no avião foi, naturalmente, por classe de bilhete, milhas frequent flyer etc por isso todos os não australianos ficavam em terra, ‘até nós’ com duas crianças.

Estávamos a começar a acampar no escritório da responsável da Virgin Australia… Estivemos à espera desde as 11.00 até as 14.30 com os miúdos sem almoçar quando finalmente chegou a notícia de que podíamos ir neste voo devido a alguns ‘no shows’ de outros passageiros. Fomos os últimos passageiros a entrar na sala de embarque e quase todas as pessoas começaram a bater palmas quando nos viram. Ninguém acreditava na possibilidade de conseguirmos ir.

Voos atrasados e cancelados não são novidade mas isto foi único. Mentiras e falta de profissionalismo como vimos poucas vezes. Primeiro o mau tempo depois o estado da pista (enquanto as outras companhias continuavam a voar). Pessoas transferidas para voos que ja estavam cancelados. A pressão enorme aos passageiros para aceitarem a devolução do bilhete e comprar com outras companhias (o mais fácil para a Virgin Australia). A última versão que ouvimos foi de que a Virgin iria fazer as pessoas voar com a Fiji Airways para Fiji e depois daí para a Australia. Mas o que mais nos chocou foi o facto de a Virgin se desresponsabilizar da estadia dos seus clientes. Não era necessário meter toda a gente em hotéis ‘de luxo’ mas pagar às pessoas qualquer coisa mid range seria sentido comum. Querida Virgin é uma vergonha a falta de consideração demonstrada em todo o processo. Nem sequer uma pessoa da Virgin veio ao hotel gerir as coisas com os clientes..mandaram cartas e deixaram o trabalho todo para os managers do hotel. Nunca digas nunca… mas a partir de agora evitaremos Virgin. Agora imaginem isto tudo com a Teresinha e o Francisco atrás…

O Holiday Inn en Vanuatu: Obrigado por tudo e pela ajuda bem para atém da vossa obrigação. O hotel é óptimo e se não fosse a incerteza de toda a situação estaríamos felizes por lá ter ficado mais uns dias.
