Is it worth going to Tanna just for the volcano? Definitely, it's AMAZING! Standing at the border of the crater of an active volcano it's something very hard to describe... We were very lucky, the day we went the volcano was specially active and there was a "bang" with flying lava every couple of minutes!
We flew into Tanna just knowing we wanted to go to Mount Yasur, the volcano, we didn't even read much about it. When we got there we saw that the minimum age recommendation was 7 years so we hesitated but we decided to go anyway. They take you to a village at the bottom of the volcano, a 1h30 driving on a bumpy unsealed road, from where we were staying. Not a very comfortable journey, specially because they drive too fast for the quality of the road and you have to hold tight all the way, more if you have 2 little kids to hold. Once you get to the village they seat you in a "row" and the local people come and do some dances and the 'big chief' to bless our volcano trip. We were seated and when they finished dancing Francisco kept asking why we couldn't go and still had to be seated there. We told him that the chief of the tribe had to authorise it and turned around. When we looked Francisco was talking to the chief, he went there by himself and asked permission to go up and screamed to everyone “He said yes!”. Everyone laughed! We jumped into pickup trucks and off we went to the volcano, through the middle of the jungle with no roads at all, going up among rocks. They leave you very close to the crater so it was an easy walk up, even for the kids.
Ashes and lava stones is what you see on the walk up to the crater, vaguely reminding you of the moon. At this point the proximity gives you an idea of the scale of the smoke column coming out of the crater and you start hearing the explosions every few minutes. People go silent and kids get nervous :-). This specific day was a ‘level 2 activity’ meaning there’s a high activity but you still can go to the crater. Luckily for us the wind direction allowed us to go to the highest point of the crater from where you can see directly inside. Once you get there, you get yourself comfortable and watch the show while ashes falling on you give the impression it is starting to rain.
Everything is timed so people get there before sunset and come back down in complete darkness allowing to see the color change from day to night. Being there at night with some loud explosions every few minutes makes you feel… small. Definitely worth it!
We went to a local village called the Black Magic tour,… it's a waste of money. It was just a bad performance... If the point of this tour is to make someone believe they’re getting an ideia of how these people live…get better actors. Not really interesting and they were really bad. They were laughing between acts and everything was awkward . The kids got scared right at the beginning and they didn't stopped terrifying them, I know it's part of the "show" but come on... Don't need to make them have nightmares!
The hotel we stayed in was ok, but definitely too expensive for what it is. You were stuck there, nothing around and there was no cheap options on the menu, it's not actually a menu, there's a board with 3 options and you have to choose one. The food was good! They could have cheaper options. With 2 small kids theres not much to do around there, they are too small to swim there (you have a path that leads to a jetty to the open sea but it's not suitable for such small children). There was no beach near and the pool was not very comfortable (only 2 chairs, no space around it and too many annoying flies). This is probably a nice place for adults or families with bigger kids. But still, if you are looking for some snorkeling, blue holes or other activities there are better places for sure. Our favourite part was to lay down on the grass at night and watch the stars… What an incredible sky! All in all, we absolutely loved the volcano but that was it! I would go back to Tanna again just to go up the volcano but one night in the island and not more.

Francisco: - I don't want to go to sleep, I want to lay here all night watching shooting stars! / Eu nao quero ir dormir, quero ficar aqui deitado toda a noite a ver estrelas cadentes!

Vale a pena ir a Tanna apenas pelo vulcão? Sem dúvida, é espectacular! Estar à beira da cratera de um vulcão activo é difícil de descrever… Tivemos imensa sorte porque no dia em que fomos o vulcão estava especialmente activo e a cada poucos minutos havia um “estrondo” a salpicar lava!
Voamos para Tanna e apenas sabíamos que queríamos ir ao monte Yasur, o vulcão, e nem sequer lemos muito sobre o assunto. Quando chegámos a Tanna demo-nos conta de que a idade mínima aconselhada era de 7 anos e ainda hesitamos mas decidimos ir na mesma. Levam-nos para uma vila no sopé do vulcão, depois de 1h30 para lá chegar por estradas de terra cheias de solavancos.
Não foi uma viagem lá muito confortável, especialmente porque eles guiam rápido demais para o estado da estrada e temos que estar “agarrados” o tempo todo, especialmente com os miúdos. Uma vez na vila, sentam-nos numa “roda” e os locais vêm e fazem as danças tradicionais e o chefe dá-nos a benção para a visita. Quando acabaram de dançar o Francisco perguntava porque é que ainda estávamos à espera. Dissemos-lhe que o chefe ainda não tinha dado autorização para irmos. Quando voltamos a olhar para ele estava a falar com o chefe a pedir para irmos ao vulcão virando-se depois para toda a gente e gritando “Ele disse que sim!”. Todos se riram. Saltamos para dentro de carrinhas de caixa aberta e começamos o caminho pelo meio de arvores e pedras, sem estrada, até estacionarmos a poucos metros da cratera.
A caminhada para a cratera é feita entre cinzas e pedras de lava num cenário que faz lembrar a lua. Aqui, a proximidade dá-nos uma idea da escala da coluna de fumo e começam-se a ouvir as explosões a cada poucos minutos. Nesta altura as pessoas ficam em silêncio e os miúdos começam a ficar nervosos :-). O dia em que fomos havia uma actividade nível 2 o que significa que havia muita actividade mas que ainda se podia ir até à cratera. Por sorte a direção do vento permitia ir ao ponto mais alto da cratera de onde se podia ver directamente para dentro do vulcão. Uma vez que lá se chega é uma questão de se encontrar um sítio confortável para ver o espectáculo enquanto as cinzas que caem dão a sensação de que esta a chover. A visita esta organizada para que se chegue à cratera antes do pôr do Sol e voltar a descer em completa escuridão o que permite ver a mudança das cores do dia para a noite. Estar num vulcão à noite com explosões bastante barulhentas faz-nos sentir…pequenos.. Vale muito a pena.
Também fomos a uma vila local num tour chamado ‘Black Magic Tour’….é um desperdício de dinheiro. Foi um muito mau teatro. Se o objectivo desde tour é fazer alguém acreditar que esta a testemunhar como vivem os locais…são precisos melhores actores. Não é interessante e os risinhos deles entre actuações torna tudo muito constrangedor. Os miúdos assustaram-se logo no inicio e eles não paravam de os aterrorizar. Assustar fazia parte do ‘número´ mas não era preciso dar-lhes material para pesadelos.
O hotel em que ficamos era bom mas claramente muito caro para o que é. Ao não haver absolutamente mais nada na ilha uma pessoa fica presa das actividades e comida do hotel…e eles aproveitam. Cada noite havia 3 pratos à escolha e tudo muito caro. Com 2 miúdos pequenos não há muito para fazer. Não há praia, apenas um caminho para um pontão directamente para mar aberto que não é aconselhável para crianças. Havia uma pequena piscina mas sem espaço e apenas 2 cadeiras com muitas moscas :-). Tudo esta pensado para adultos e crianças mais velhas mas mesmo assim há sítios melhores que Tanna para quem quer snorkeling e ver ‘blue holes’.
Adoramos a rotina de nos deitarmos na relva depois do jantar para ver as estrelas. O melhor céu que já vi.
Resumidamente adoramos a ida ao vulcão mas nada mais. Voltaria feliz a Tanna para voltar a ir ao vulcão mas uma noite na ilha é mais que suficiente.
