It’s was good but not great! Things got twisted since the beginning. We had planned to stay 1 month here, find a house and enrol kids in school. Having a “normal” life with some routine for 1 month was all we wanted… Well we did all of that but only for 2 weeks! It’s holiday season in New Zealand (we should have known) and the islands are fully booked. There was not a single place (within our budget, and we have gone a lot higher) that could accommodate our party of 4.
Let’s start from the beginning, we arrived with only a couple of nights booked so we could find a house for the month. We were really lucky and found the best house ever, Kakera apartments. Andrew and Melinda are great hosts and they made us a nice discount ;-). Unfortunately we had to leave much earlier than we would have liked. When we went to see the house, they were showing us around and we saw a school on the backyard. That was the perfect combination! The people on the school were very nice and we enrolled the kids.
There are some very good beaches in Rarotonga but all that amazing pictures you see from the Cook Islands of white sandy beaches with turquoise water are mainly from Aitutaki (a small island near Rarotonga, the main island). We intended to spend some days there, but once again, was full and no place for us to sleep (maybe there were one or two, but we didn't liked the reviews). I will always regret not having gone there… specially because the weather has been crap (more on that later) and everyone keeps telling us that in Aitutaki is warm and sunny.
What is everyone that comes to the pacific islands looking for? Beach, beach and more beach! It has rained a lot and in almost 3 weeks that we spend here, we only managed a few nice days at the beach. What saved us was the mornings kids spent in school. There’s not much to do around here either than head for the beach. We had to be creative and find ways to entertain the kids. We watched movies, we made puzzles, we painted… etc etc. We went to the park and to the beach even if it was raining. A great thing to do in Rarotonga if the weather is not good is the Wildlife center and the Coco Putt mini golf. The cruises, not so much… We made one, people from the boat were very funny, but it’s not really worth it.
For eating out we absolutely loved Trader’s Jack. The food is delicious! The servings are huge, everyone gets out of there with a doggy bag. Muri Night Market was our second kitchen, very close to our place, cheap (we shared 2 portions among the 4) and the best cheesecake I’ve ever eaten. Tips: get there early and get in line for the cheesecake, if you are lucky you might be able to buy one before they run out. Then go get your food and you scored yourself a cheesecake for dessert (we know this cos we didn't get one all the time, they run out really fast).
Homeless we had no option other than change our plans. We changed our flight but we still had to find a place to sleep for a few nights (it was too expensive to leave on the same day we left the house). It was not easy but we found a nice house, not on the sea line but inside the island. The house was good but too close to the “jungle” for me, too many bugs. It was ok for 3 nights but thank God we didn't have to stay there longer…
Our expectations for this part of the world were far greater than what we got. We were not that sad to leave earlier (except for the school). Let’s hope we can find the warm and sun in our next destination…
Foi bom, mas nao foi óptimo! As coisas arrancaram torcidas desde o principio. Tínhamos pensado ficar por aqui 1 mês, arranjar uma casa e pôr os miúdos na escola. Ter uma vida "normal" com alguma rutina durante um mês estava mesmo a apetecer-nos... Bom, fizemos tudo isso mas apenas durante duas semanas! É época de férias na Nova Zelândia (deveríamos ter-nos informado melhor) e as Ilhas Cook estavam com lotação esgotada. Não encontramos um único sitio (dentro do nosso orçamento e mesmo assim subimos bastante) onde pudéssemos ficar os 4.
Vamos começar do principio, chegámos com apenas um par de noites reservadas para podermos procurar uma casa. Tivemos imensa sorte e encontrámos uma casa fantástica, Kakera Apartments. O Andrew e a Melinda são uns anfitriões maravilhosos e fizeram-nos um óptimo desconto ;-). Infelizmente tivemos que sair muito antes do que o que teríamos gostado. Quando fomos ver a casa reparámos numa escola, praticamente no jardim de trás. Era a combinação perfeita! As pessoas da escola foram tao simpáticas que inscrevemos logo os miúdos.
Há praias óptimas em Rarotonga, mas todas aquelas fotografias paradisíacas que vêm das Ilhas Cook, de areia branca e agua azul turquesa são principalmente de Aitutaki (uma pequena ilha ao pé de Rarotonga, a ilha principal). Fazia parte dos planos passar lá uns dias, mas uma vez mais estava tudo completamente cheio e não arranjámos onde dormir (havia um ou outro sítio, mas as opiniões deixavam muito a desejar). Vamos ficar para sempre com Aitutaki entalado... principalmente porque o tempo não esteve especialmente bom (mais sobre isso depois) e toda a gente nos dizia que em Aitutaki estava sol e calor.
O que é que toda agente quer quando vai para uma ilha no meio do pacífico? Praia, praia e mais praia! Choveu imenso e nas 3 semanas que lá estivemos apenas conseguimos uns poucos dias bons de praia. O que nos salvou foram as manhas que os miúdos passavam na escola. Não há muito para fazer por aqui para além de praia. Tínhamos que ser criativos no que respeita a entreter os miúdos. Vimos filmes, fizemos puzzles, pintámos... etc etc. Fomos para o parque e para a praia mesmo com chuva. Ir ao Wildlife center e ao Coco Putt mini golf foram programas com muito sucesso. Os "cruzeiros" não tanto... Fizemos um, as pessoas do barco era divertidas, mas não achámos que valesse muito a pena.
Para comer fora adorámos o Trader's Jack. A comida é optima! A quantidade é enorme, toda a gente saía de lá com um saquinho com as sobras. O Muri Night Market era a nossa segunda cozinha, mesmo ao lado de casa, barato (duas doses para os 4 era mais que suficiente) e foi onde comemos o melhor cheesecake de sempre. Dicas: é preciso chegar cedo e ir directamente para a fila do cheesecake onde, com sorte, se consegue comprar um antes de esgotarem. Só depois se vai buscar o resto do jantar, já com a sobremesa 'no bolso' (sabemos isto porque nem sempre comemos o tal cheesecake...esgota realmente depressa).
Sem casa onde ficar fomos obrigados a mudar os nossos planos. Mudamos os voos mas ainda tivemos que procurar um sítio para dormir 3 noites porque era muito caro voar no dia em que largávamos a casa. Apesar da pouca disponibilidade encontramos uma casa boa que não era na costa mas no interior da ilha. Apesar de ser boa estava demasiado perto da 'selva' para o meu gosto, com demasiada bicharada fora (e dentro) de casa. Serviu muito bem para 3 noites mas ainda bem que não foi preciso lá ficar mais tempo.
As nossas expectativas para 'este lado do mundo' eram muito mais altas do que o que acabamos por ver. Acabou por não ser mau sair alguns dias antes (excepto pela escola). Esperamos encontrar sol e calor na próxima paragem...
